ZO Skin Health sells eight retinol products in Canada, at 0.25, 0.3, 0.5 and 1 percent, and the number on the box is only half the decision. The other half is what the retinol is built to do: Retinol Skin Brightener is the tone and discolouration line, Wrinkle + Texture is the lines and smoothness line, Radical Night Repair is the high-strength night treatment, and the three new 0.3 products use ZO-RDS encapsulation so that a lower strength does more with fewer expected reactions. Here is how to pick the right one, and when to move up.
Quick answers
- Which ZO retinol should a beginner start with?
- Wrinkle + Texture 0.3 or Retinol Skin Brightener 0.3, the ZO-RDS encapsulated products, if you want the gentlest start. Retinol Skin Brightener 0.25% is the traditional entry point when it is in stock.
- Retinol Skin Brightener or Wrinkle + Texture?
- Retinol Skin Brightener if uneven tone, dark spots and dullness are the concern. Wrinkle + Texture if fine lines, wrinkles and rough texture are. Same retinol, different supporting formula.
- What is the strongest ZO retinol?
- Retinol Skin Brightener 1% and Radical Night Repair, both at 1 percent. Radical Night Repair is encapsulated and made for night use only.
- What does ZO-RDS mean?
- ZO's encapsulation of retinol in a liposomal system for controlled release. ZO positions the 0.3 products as doing the work of a higher strength with less irritation.
- How often should I use it?
- ZO's directions for the classic retinols: twice a week, then alternate days, then daily as tolerated. The 0.3 ZO-RDS products are directed once daily for the first week, then twice daily.
- Is Daily Power Defense a retinol?
- It contains a small amount of retinol but ZO positions it as a barrier and antioxidant serum, not a retinol treatment. It is used alongside these products, not instead of them.
The two ZO retinol lines
Most brands sell one retinol in three strengths. ZO sells two families and then layers strengths across them, which is why the range looks confusing on a collection page and is simpler than it appears once you see the split.
Retinol Skin Brightener is the tone line. ZO describes it as a retinol-based solution for the appearance of uneven skin tone, and the supporting ingredients are chosen for that job: a brightening blend, glutathione, a stable vitamin C derivative and bakuchiol to calm. It comes in 0.25, 0.5 and 1 percent, and since 2026 in a 0.3 ZO-RDS version.
Wrinkle + Texture is the lines line. ZO describes it as a high-potency retinol that visibly improves the appearance of wrinkles, built with the brand's ZCORE complex for the look of firmness and ZPRO protein complex for hydration. It comes at 0.5 percent, and since 2026 in a 0.3 ZO-RDS version.
Sitting beside both are two single products. Radical Night Repair is the 1 percent encapsulated night retinol with vitamins C, E and A and botanicals ZO says help minimize the look of redness. Clear Renewal is the 0.3 ZO-RDS retinol with 1 percent salicylic acid, for blemish-prone skin.
The short version. Choose the family by your main concern, tone or lines. Choose the strength by your experience with retinol. If you are new, or your skin reacts easily, start with a 0.3 ZO-RDS product. We covered the new 0.3 launches in detail in ZO-RDS explained.

| Radical Night Repair$280 · 60 ml | 1% | Lines, texture and uneven pigmentation, experienced users | Encapsulated | 2 to 3 pumps twice a week, build to nightly. PM only |
| Clear Renewal$235 · 50 ml | 0.3% plus 1% salicylic acid | Blemish-prone skin, clarity and smoothness | ZO-RDS liposomal encapsulation | Once daily for a week, then twice daily |
Every one of these carries the same two instructions from ZO: start gradually if you are new to retinol, and wear SPF 30 or higher every day, because retinol makes skin more sensitive to the sun. ZO also says that redness, flakiness, dryness and some stinging are normal while skin acclimates, and suggests pairing the retinol with one of its hydrators. Retinol Skin Brightener 0.25% is listed here for completeness; it is currently out of stock with us, and the 0.3 ZO-RDS version is the closer substitute than the 0.5.
Where to start by experience
Never used retinol, or skin that reacts easily
Start with a 0.3 ZO-RDS product. ZO built this encapsulation so that retinol is released in a controlled way rather than all at once, and the brand's own description of the launch is that the 0.3 products deliver the retinol with improved comfort. The directions reflect that confidence: once a day for the first week, then twice a day, with no twice-a-week ramp. Pick Retinol Skin Brightener 0.3 for tone or Wrinkle + Texture 0.3 for lines.
If you would rather follow the traditional route, Retinol Skin Brightener 0.25% is ZO's lowest classic strength, with the standard twice-a-week ramp. It is out of stock with us as this guide is written, so check the product page before planning a routine around it.
Used retinol before and tolerated it
Go to 0.5 percent. Retinol Skin Brightener 0.5% is the mid-strength tone product and the one most people in this group end up on. Wrinkle + Texture 0.5 is the equivalent for lines, and the 30 ml size at $155 is a sensible way to confirm it suits you before committing to the 50 ml.
Experienced, and currently on a 0.5 with no reaction
This is the 1 percent group. Retinol Skin Brightener 1% keeps you on the tone line at the top strength. Radical Night Repair is the other 1 percent option, encapsulated, night only, and formulated for lines, texture and uneven pigmentation together, which makes it the one to choose when both concerns apply. ZO's directions for it start at two to three pumps twice a week even for experienced users.
Which one for your concern
| Your concern | New to retinol | Conditioned skin | Experienced |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dark spots, uneven tone, dullness | Retinol Skin Brightener 0.3 | Retinol Skin Brightener 0.5% | Retinol Skin Brightener 1% |
| Fine lines, wrinkles, rough texture | Wrinkle + Texture 0.3 | Wrinkle + Texture 0.5 | Radical Night Repair |
| Lines and tone together | Wrinkle + Texture 0.3, add brightening later | Retinol Skin Brightener 0.5% at night, Brightalive by day | Radical Night Repair |
| Breakouts and congestion | Clear Renewal | Clear Renewal | Clear Renewal, or Wrinkle + Texture 0.5 if texture is the bigger issue |
| Reactive skin, mild redness | Wrinkle + Texture 0.3 or Retinol Skin Brightener 0.3 | Stay at 0.3, or 0.5 with Hydrating Crème | 0.5 is usually enough; 1% only if a provider agrees |
How to move up a strength
The signal to move up is not that your current product has stopped working. Retinol keeps doing its job at any strength. The signal is that you have used a strength daily for three months or more with no dryness, flaking or stinging, and you want to ask more of it. ZO's own directions give the shape of the move:
- Finish the current bottle on daily use with no reaction. If you are still getting flaking at 0.5, there is no case for 1 percent yet.
- Introduce the new strength twice a week, on non-consecutive nights, exactly as if you were starting again. Use the old strength on the other nights if you have some left.
- After two weeks, move to alternate days. After another two to four weeks, daily as tolerated.
- If a step brings back flaking, hold at that frequency for another two weeks rather than pushing on. ZO suggests pairing with a hydrator such as Hydrating Crème through the adjustment.
- Keep SPF 30 or higher every morning throughout. This does not change with strength.
One thing to know about the 0.3 ZO-RDS products: they are not a step below 0.25 on the same ladder. ZO positions them as a different delivery, directed twice daily from week two, so a 0.3 used twice a day is a serious retinol routine in its own right, not a beginner's stepping stone you have to leave behind. Many people will stay on one indefinitely.
Where retinol sits in the ZO routine
ZO organises its routine as Getting Skin Ready (cleanse, exfoliate, tone), then prevent and correct, then protect. Retinol is a correct step, applied to clean, dry skin after cleansing and toning and before moisturizer. Our ZO routine guide walks the full sequence; the retinol-specific points are these.
- Daily Power Defense goes on first, morning and night, as the barrier and antioxidant serum. It is not your retinol step, a confusion we cleared up in Is Daily Power Defense a retinol.
- The retinol goes on after Daily Power Defense. Retinol Skin Brightener is directed AM or PM; Wrinkle + Texture and Radical Night Repair are night products.
- Moisturizer, if you need one, goes on last at night. Which ZO crème suits a retinol phase is covered in ZO moisturizers compared.
- Exfoliating Polish stays at two or three times a week and is best kept to mornings while you are building up a retinol, so the two are not stacked on the same night.
- SPF 30 or higher every morning. ZO's sunscreens are compared in ZO sunscreens compared.
If you are weighing ZO against another medical-grade retinol, the closest comparison on our shelves is SkinCeuticals, whose three night creams run 0.3, 0.5 and 1.0 on a single ladder with no encapsulated tier. We compared those in SkinCeuticals Retinol 0.3, 0.5 or 1.0. The practical difference is that ZO lets you pick a formula for tone or for lines at the same strength, where SkinCeuticals gives you one formula and asks you to choose the strength.

Which ZO retinol is best for beginners?
For a first retinol, ZO's 0.3 ZO-RDS products, Retinol Skin Brightener 0.3 for tone or Wrinkle + Texture 0.3 for lines, are the gentlest start because the retinol is encapsulated for controlled release. Retinol Skin Brightener 0.25% is the lowest classic strength and the traditional entry point when it is in stock.
What is the difference between ZO Retinol Skin Brightener and Wrinkle + Texture?
Retinol Skin Brightener is ZO's retinol for the appearance of uneven tone and discolouration, with a brightening blend, glutathione and a vitamin C derivative. Wrinkle + Texture is ZO's retinol for the appearance of lines, wrinkles and texture, with the ZCORE and ZPRO complexes. Both are available at 0.3 (ZO-RDS) and 0.5 percent; Retinol Skin Brightener also comes at 0.25 and 1 percent.
Is Radical Night Repair stronger than Retinol Skin Brightener 1%?
Both ZO Radical Night Repair and Retinol Skin Brightener 1% contain 1 percent retinol. Radical Night Repair is encapsulated, formulated for lines, texture and uneven pigmentation together, and directed for night use only. Retinol Skin Brightener 1% is the tone-focused product and is directed AM or PM.
Can I use ZO retinol in the morning?
ZO's directions list Retinol Skin Brightener for AM or PM use, with SPF 30 or higher required during the day. Wrinkle + Texture 0.5 and Radical Night Repair are listed as PM products. Most people find a retinol easiest to tolerate at night, and that is where we would place any of them when starting.
How long until I should move from 0.5 to 1 percent?
Move up a ZO retinol strength only after three months or more of daily use with no dryness, flaking or stinging. Then introduce the new strength twice a week and build up again, as ZO's directions describe for any new retinol. There is no requirement to move up; many people stay at 0.5 permanently.
Do I still need a retinol if I use Daily Power Defense?
Yes, if you want a retinol's effect on the look of tone or lines. ZO Daily Power Defense contains a small amount of retinol but is positioned by ZO as a barrier and antioxidant serum for morning and night. A ZO retinol treatment is applied after it, not instead of it.
Can I use ZO retinol with Exfoliating Polish or Complexion Renewal Pads?
Yes, with spacing. ZO's Getting Skin Ready steps, including Exfoliating Polish and Complexion Renewal Pads, are part of the full routine, but while you are building up a retinol it is easier on the skin to keep the Polish to mornings two or three times a week rather than using it on a retinol night.
Which ZO retinol is best for dark spots?
Retinol Skin Brightener, at the strength that matches your experience: 0.3 (ZO-RDS) or 0.25% for new users, 0.5% for conditioned skin, 1% for experienced users. For a non-retinol route to the look of uneven tone, ZO's Skin Tone Evening + Brightening Program pairs Brightalive with Daily Power Defense and the Getting Skin Ready steps.
