ZO-RDS Explained: The New 0.3% ZO Retinols

New launch · ZO Skin Health

ZO-RDS is ZO Skin Health's new retinol delivery system: retinol encapsulated in a biomimetic liposome and released in a controlled way, so the skin gets more from a lower concentration with fewer of the reactions people expect from retinol. It arrives in three new 0.3% products, each built for a different concern. This guide explains what ZO-RDS is, what each product does, and how they fit against the ZO retinols you may already know.

ZO Skin Health Clear Renewal, Wrinkle + Texture 0.3 and Retinol Skin Brightener 0.3, the three new ZO-RDS retinols
The three ZO-RDS launches, left to right: Clear Renewal, Wrinkle + Texture 0.3, Retinol Skin Brightener 0.3. Each is 50 mL and $235.

Quick answers

What is ZO-RDS?
ZO's Retinol Delivery System. Real retinol is encapsulated in a biomimetic liposomal system engineered for controlled release and targeted delivery, which ZO says protects the retinol, delivers it more precisely and supports a more comfortable experience.
Which products have it?
Three new 0.3% retinols: Wrinkle + Texture 0.3 for lines and texture, Retinol Skin Brightener 0.3 for uneven tone, and Clear Renewal for blemish-prone skin. All 50 mL, all $235.
Is 0.3% strong enough?
ZO's position is that delivery matters more than the number. ZO-RDS is designed so a 0.3% concentration reaches the skin efficiently, with fewer expected reactions than a conventional retinol at a higher percentage.
How do I use them?
One pump on clean, dry skin once a day for the first week, then up to twice a day, morning and/or evening. SPF 30 or higher every morning.
Does this replace the existing ZO retinols?
No. Wrinkle + Texture 0.5%, Retinol Skin Brightener 0.5% and 1% and Radical Night Retinol continue. The 0.25% Retinol Skin Brightener is no longer available in Canada, and Retinol Skin Brightener 0.3 is its natural successor.

What ZO-RDS is

ZO Skin Health has built its retinols on unencapsulated retinol since 2007. ZO-RDS, which stands for Retinol Delivery System, is the first change to how that retinol is carried. In ZO's words it is an "exclusive encapsulation of retinol in a biomimetic liposomal system engineered for controlled release and targeted delivery."

A liposome is a tiny sphere with a shell made of the same kind of lipids found in skin, which is what biomimetic means here. Retinol sits inside the shell. Two things follow. The retinol is protected from light and air until it is on the skin, so it stays potent. And it is released gradually rather than all at once, which is the mechanism behind ZO's claim of fewer expected reactions.

ZO summarises the system in three points, which are worth quoting because they are the whole pitch.

1

Protects the retinol

"Protects the power of real retinol, so skin gets the most from every application."

2

Delivers it precisely

"Delivers retinol with greater precision to optimize visible results."

3

Keeps it comfortable

"Supports a more comfortable retinol experience."

What it is not. ZO-RDS is not a retinol alternative, a retinoid ester or a "retinol-like" plant ingredient. Every ZO-RDS product contains real retinol at 0.3%. The system changes how the retinol is carried, not what it is.

Why 0.3%, and why it is not a step down

The instinct with retinol is to read the percentage as the strength. It is a reasonable instinct and it is also the reason so many people give up on retinol in the first month: they buy the highest number they can find and their skin objects.

The percentage on the label describes how much retinol is in the tube. It does not describe how much of it survives storage and application, how much actually reaches the skin where it works, or how quickly it arrives. Delivery governs all three. A well-delivered 0.3% can do more useful work than a poorly delivered higher concentration, and it can do it with less of the dryness, flaking and stinging that make people stop.

That is the argument for ZO-RDS at 0.3%. ZO positions the new products as safe for all skin types and formulated to minimise the appearance of irritation, and its independent study on Wrinkle + Texture 0.3, covered below, is where it puts numbers behind that. Our fall retinol reset guide explains the same principle across every brand we carry: consistency beats concentration.

The three new products

Same delivery system, same 0.3% retinol, same 50 mL pump and same price. What differs is everything built around the retinol, and that is what decides which one is yours.

Where they sit in the ZO retinol range

ZO now sells seven retinols in Canada. The three new ones are not simply the bottom rungs of the old ladder, because the delivery system is different, so the honest way to compare them is by job rather than by percentage alone.

The ZO retinol range in Canada, September 2026
Product Retinol Delivery Built for Price
Wrinkle + Texture 0.3 0.3% ZO-RDS encapsulated Lines and texture, with fewer expected reactions $235
Retinol Skin Brightener 0.3 0.3% ZO-RDS encapsulated Uneven tone, replaces the 0.25% $235
Clear Renewal 0.3% ZO-RDS encapsulated Blemish-prone skin, with 1% salicylic acid $235
Retinol Skin Brightener 0.5% 0.5% Conventional Uneven tone, tolerant skin $165
Wrinkle + Texture 0.5% 0.5% Conventional Lines and texture, tolerant skin $130 (30 mL), $210 (50 mL)
Retinol Skin Brightener 1% 1% Conventional Uneven tone, experienced retinol users $125 (30 mL), $190 (50 mL)
Radical Night Retinol 1% Conventional Texture, pigmentation and lines, night only, experienced users $240

Two things stand out. The new products cost more than the 0.5% versions of the same names, which reflects the delivery technology rather than the retinol content. And they are designed for morning and evening use, where the conventional ZO retinols are typically evening products. Two applications a day of a controlled-release 0.3% is a different proposition from one application of an unencapsulated 0.5%.

How to use them

ZO gives the same directions for all three.

  1. Get skin ready. Cleanse, exfoliate and tone as usual. If you use Daily Power Defense or another serum, the retinol goes on after it.
  2. Week one: once a day. One pump to clean, dry skin, morning or evening. Do not add a second application yet, even if your skin feels fine.
  3. From week two: up to twice a day. Morning and evening if your skin is comfortable. If it is not, stay at once a day. There is no prize for arriving at twice daily early.
  4. Every morning: SPF 30 or higher. Retinol increases the skin's sensitivity to sun regardless of how it is delivered. ZO's sunscreens or any broad-spectrum SPF you already use.
  5. Hold off on irritated or compromised skin, and for the period your clinic specifies after a peel, laser or other in-clinic treatment.

Using Clear Renewal with other acne products. Clear Renewal contains 1% salicylic acid. If you already use benzoyl peroxide, another salicylic acid product, a topical antibiotic or oral isotretinoin, ZO's direction is to speak with your physician before adding it.

What ZO's study showed

ZO commissioned an independent, third-party clinical study on Wrinkle + Texture 0.3: 34 subjects aged 40 to 65 with moderate wrinkles and Fitzpatrick skin types II to IV, followed for 12 weeks. ZO reports the following from that study.

Wrinkle + Texture 0.3, as reported by ZO Skin Health from its 34-subject, 12-week study
Timepoint Reported finding
4 weeks 100% of subjects saw improvement in overall appearance, with no irritation and no itching reported
8 weeks 100% of subjects showed improvement in the look of skin texture
12 weeks 43% improvement in the look of skin texture, 26% in overall appearance, 22% in global facial wrinkles, 20% in global facial lines

Two caveats, stated plainly. These are ZO's reported figures from a brand-commissioned study, and 34 subjects is a small group. They describe visible, cosmetic change in that group over that period, not a guarantee of what any one person will see. ZO has not published equivalent figures for Retinol Skin Brightener 0.3 or Clear Renewal, so the "no irritation" finding applies to Wrinkle + Texture 0.3 specifically.

Who should still choose 0.5% or 1%

ZO-RDS is a reason for many people to start lower than they would have. It is not a reason for everyone to move down.

  • You are already comfortable on 0.5% or 1%. If your skin tolerates your current ZO retinol and you are happy with the results, there is no need to change. Finish what you have.
  • You are on a ZO program built around a specific strength. The Anti-Aging High Potency Retinol Program is designed around its included retinol. Swap only with guidance.
  • You want the 30 mL size. The ZO-RDS products come in 50 mL only. Wrinkle + Texture 0.5% and Retinol Skin Brightener 1% still offer a 30 mL option at $130 and $125.

Everyone else, and especially anyone who has tried retinol and stopped, has a better starting point than they had a month ago.

Frequently asked questions

What does ZO-RDS stand for?

Retinol Delivery System. It is ZO Skin Health's proprietary encapsulation of retinol in a biomimetic liposomal system, engineered for controlled release and targeted delivery. It launched in September 2026 in three new 0.3% products.

Is ZO-RDS retinol weaker than ZO's 0.5% or 1% retinols?

It contains less retinol by percentage, at 0.3%. ZO's position is that the encapsulated delivery lets that 0.3% work efficiently with fewer expected reactions, and it recommends the ZO-RDS products for all skin types. Percentage alone does not tell you how much retinol reaches the skin.

Which ZO-RDS product is best for beginners?

Match it to your concern. Wrinkle + Texture 0.3 for lines and texture, Retinol Skin Brightener 0.3 for uneven tone, Clear Renewal for blemish-prone skin. All three are designed as a first retinol. Start once a day for the first week.

Can I use ZO-RDS retinols in the morning?

Yes. ZO's directions are morning and/or evening, once a day for the first week and up to twice a day after that. Always follow with a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher in the morning.

What happened to Retinol Skin Brightener 0.25%?

ZO has withdrawn the 0.25% in Canada. Retinol Skin Brightener 0.3, built on ZO-RDS, is its replacement.

Can I use Clear Renewal with benzoyl peroxide or other acne treatments?

Clear Renewal contains 1% salicylic acid. ZO advises speaking with your physician before combining it with benzoyl peroxide, other salicylic acid products, topical antibiotics or oral isotretinoin.

How much do the ZO-RDS retinols cost in Canada?

$235 each for 50 mL, which is ZO's suggested retail price in Canada. Your Skin Solution is an authorized Canadian retailer, with free shipping on orders over $99.

Product positioning, ingredient descriptions, directions and study figures are as published by ZO Skin Health.
