ZO Skin Health sells five face sunscreens in Canada, and the right one depends on three things: whether you want mineral or chemical filters, how much finish you want from it (matte, bare, tinted or powder), and whether you need water resistance. This guide puts all five side by side so you can pick one in a few minutes, and shows where ZO's sunscreen sits in the brand's morning routine.
Quick answers
- Which ZO sunscreen is best for everyday use?
- Daily Sheer SPF 50 ($95) for most skin: a lightweight chemical sunscreen with a sheer matte finish and 40-minute water resistance. Sheer Fluid SPF 50 ($95) if you prefer a mineral filter.
- Which ZO sunscreens are mineral?
- Three of the five. Sheer Fluid SPF 50 (22 percent non-nano zinc oxide), Sunscreen + Primer SPF 30 (20 percent zinc oxide, 1 percent titanium dioxide) and Sunscreen + Powder SPF 45 (25 percent zinc oxide). Daily Sheer SPF 50 and Smart Tone SPF 50 use chemical filters.
- Which ZO sunscreen is tinted?
- Smart Tone SPF 50 ($88) has a self-adjusting tint with iron oxides and mica. Sunscreen + Powder SPF 45 ($86) comes in Light, Medium and Deep and gives light, buildable coverage.
- Which one works under makeup?
- Sunscreen + Primer SPF 30 ($78). It is formulated with silicones to give a smooth matte base, so it doubles as a primer.
- How do I reapply sunscreen over makeup?
- Sunscreen + Powder SPF 45 is the reapplication product. It brushes on over makeup, absorbs surface oil and can be used every two hours without disturbing what is underneath.
- What is ZOX12 in ZO sunscreens?
- ZOX12 is ZO's antioxidant complex of encapsulated vitamins A, C and E. The brand describes it as 12 hours of defence against free radical damage. Every ZO sunscreen in this guide contains it.

What every ZO sunscreen has in common
ZO builds all five around the same idea, which the brand calls triple-spectrum protection: broad-spectrum UVA and UVB filters, plus two extra layers it adds on top. The first is fractionated melanin, a plant-derived pigment ZO includes to help shield skin from high-energy visible (HEV) blue light. The second is ZOX12, an antioxidant complex of encapsulated vitamins A, C and E that the brand describes as 12 hours of defence against free radical damage and the effects of infrared (IR-A) light.
In practice, the shared base means you are not choosing between a "good" and a "basic" ZO sunscreen. You are choosing a filter type and a finish. Every one of them is labelled for all skin types, every one is for morning use, and every one carries the same reapplication instruction: at least every two hours, and more often if you swim or sweat.
The one rule that matters more than the product. The best sunscreen is the one you will apply generously and reapply. If a $95 sunscreen feels heavy enough that you use half the amount, a $78 one you like wearing will serve you better. Pick by finish first.
Mineral or chemical: how ZO splits the range
Three of the five are mineral (zinc oxide, with a little titanium dioxide in the Primer) and two are chemical (avobenzone, homosalate, octisalate and octocrylene in both). Neither type is better in the abstract, and ZO does not position one as the premium option. They behave differently on the skin, which is what should drive your choice.
| Consideration | Mineral (Sheer Fluid, Primer, Powder) | Chemical (Daily Sheer, Smart Tone) |
|---|---|---|
| How it works | Zinc oxide sits on the surface and reflects and absorbs UV | Organic filters absorb UV and release it as heat |
| Feel | Slightly more presence on the skin, more matte | Thinner, disappears faster, the sheerest feel of the range |
| Sensitive or reactive skin | Usually the first choice; Sheer Fluid is fragrance-free | Fine for most people, but patch test if your skin is easily bothered |
| White cast | ZO uses pigment technology in Sheer Fluid and tint in the Powder to blend on deeper tones | None |
| Water resistance | None of the three is rated water resistant | Daily Sheer is rated for 40 minutes; Smart Tone is not |
If you came to ZO from a mineral sunscreen such as the ones in our mineral sunscreen guide, Sheer Fluid is the closest equivalent. If you have always used a chemical sunscreen and never had a problem, Daily Sheer is the easiest switch.
The five sunscreens, one by one

Daily Sheer Broad-Spectrum Sunscreen SPF 50
- Filters Avobenzone 3 percent, homosalate 6.8 percent, octisalate 5 percent, octocrylene 10 percent
- Finish Sheer, matte, dries quickly
- Water resistance 40 minutes
- Also contains ZOX12 antioxidant complex, fractionated melanin, glycerin for hydration
- Size and price 45 ml, $95
The one most people should start with. It is the only ZO sunscreen rated water and perspiration resistant, so it covers commuting, a lunchtime walk and a workout without a second thought. The finish is matte enough for oily and combination skin and light enough to wear under makeup. Shop Daily Sheer SPF 50

Sheer Fluid Broad-Spectrum Sunscreen SPF 50
- Filters Non-nano zinc oxide 22 percent
- Finish Ultra-lightweight fluid, natural bare-faced look
- Water resistance Not rated
- Also contains ZOX12, melanin, bisabolol, ethyl ferulate, rosemary extract; fragrance-free
- Size and price 50 ml, $95
ZO's answer to the usual complaint about mineral sunscreen, which is that it feels like a mineral sunscreen. The fluid texture is thin, you shake the bottle before use, and the brand's pigment technology is designed to let 22 percent zinc oxide blend on all skin tones rather than leaving a cast. The natural first pick for sensitive skin, and the one to use after a procedure once your clinic clears you for sunscreen. Shop Sheer Fluid SPF 50

Smart Tone Broad-Spectrum SPF 50
- Filters Avobenzone 3 percent, homosalate 7.34 percent, octisalate 5 percent, octocrylene 10 percent
- Finish Lightweight, self-adjusting tint, hydrated glow
- Water resistance Not rated
- Also contains Iron oxides and mica, ZOX12, melanin, tetrahexyldecyl ascorbate (a stable vitamin C)
- Size and price 45 ml, $88
A single universal tint that ZO says adjusts to complement most skin tones. It will not replace foundation, but on a no-makeup day it takes the edge off redness and unevenness, and it leaves a dewier finish than Daily Sheer. ZO includes a stable form of vitamin C that it positions for the look of dark spots. If you tend toward shine by noon, Daily Sheer or the Primer will suit you better. Shop Smart Tone SPF 50

Sunscreen + Primer Broad-Spectrum SPF 30
- Filters Zinc oxide 20 percent, titanium dioxide 1 percent
- Finish Smooth matte, silicone primer base
- Water resistance Not rated
- Also contains ZOX12, natural melanin, vitamin E
- Size and price 30 ml, $78
Two steps in one for anyone who wears foundation daily. The silicones give the soft, blurred base you would expect from a primer, and the zinc oxide does the sun protection. SPF 30 is the lowest in the range, which is still adequate for an office day with the standard two-hourly reapplication; for a long day outside, choose one of the SPF 50s. Shop Sunscreen + Primer SPF 30

Sunscreen + Powder Broad-Spectrum SPF 45
- Filters Zinc oxide 25 percent
- Finish Brush-on powder, light buildable coverage with a soft glow; Light, Medium or Deep
- Water resistance Not rated
- Also contains ZOX12, fractionated melanin, light-reflecting minerals
- Size and price 3 g, $86
Not a first-application sunscreen. A powder cannot be applied thickly enough to deliver its labelled SPF on bare skin, so treat it as the product that keeps your morning sunscreen honest: brush it on over makeup every two hours, and it absorbs surface oil while it tops up protection. The brush is built into the cap, so it lives in a bag. Shop Sunscreen + Powder SPF 45

Where sunscreen sits in a ZO routine
ZO's morning routine follows its Getting Skin Ready sequence (cleanse, exfoliate, tone), then treatment, then protection. Sunscreen is always the last step. The ZO beginner routine guide walks through the full sequence; here is the short morning version.
- Cleanse with Gentle Cleanser or the ZO cleanser you already use.
- Exfoliate and tone as your routine calls for: Exfoliating Polish two or three times a week, Complexion Renewal Pads daily if you use them.
- Treat. Daily Power Defense, and any morning serum such as 10% Vitamin C Self Activating, go on before sunscreen. Thinnest textures first.
- Protect. Your chosen ZO sunscreen, applied generously 15 minutes before you go outside. Sunscreen + Primer counts as this step; a powder does not.
- Makeup, if you wear it, over the sunscreen. Sunscreen + Powder for reapplication through the day.
If you use a ZO retinol at night (Wrinkle + Texture, Retinol Skin Brightener), morning sunscreen is not optional. Retinol makes skin more sun-sensitive, and the ZO Skin Health Canada guide counts daily SPF as part of the retinol protocol rather than a separate decision.
How much to use and when to reapply
Most sunscreen under-performs because of how it is applied, not which bottle it came from. For the face and neck, use about a quarter teaspoon, or the length of two fingers. Apply 15 minutes before sun exposure, which is on the ZO label for every one of these products. Reapply at least every two hours, and sooner if you swim or sweat. Daily Sheer keeps its rating for 40 minutes in water; the others are not rated for water, so reapply as soon as you dry off.
Canadian winters do not change the rule. UVA passes through cloud and glass, and snow reflects it back at you. Keep the morning step through November to March, and move to a richer moisturizer underneath it rather than dropping the SPF.

Shop ZO Skin HealthFrequently asked questions
Which ZO sunscreen is best for oily skin?
Daily Sheer SPF 50 for a matte, non-greasy finish that is also water resistant, or Sunscreen + Primer SPF 30 if you wear makeup and want a matte base. Both are designed to sit without shine on oily skin.
Which ZO sunscreen is best for sensitive skin?
Sheer Fluid SPF 50. It is a mineral sunscreen with 22 percent non-nano zinc oxide, it is fragrance-free, and it includes bisabolol for comfort. Sunscreen + Powder SPF 45 is also mineral and suits sensitive skin for reapplication.
Is ZO Daily Sheer a mineral or chemical sunscreen?
Daily Sheer SPF 50 is a chemical sunscreen. Its filters are avobenzone, homosalate, octisalate and octocrylene. Sheer Fluid SPF 50 is the mineral equivalent at the same price.
Can I use ZO Sunscreen + Powder as my only sunscreen?
No. Sunscreen + Powder SPF 45 is for reapplying over makeup through the day. A powder is not applied thickly enough to deliver full labelled protection on bare skin, so use a lotion or fluid sunscreen in the morning and the powder for touch-ups.
Does ZO Smart Tone work on deeper skin tones?
ZO describes Smart Tone SPF 50 as a self-adjusting tint that complements most skin tones, and it uses chemical filters so there is no zinc oxide cast. Sunscreen + Powder SPF 45 comes in Light, Medium and Deep for a closer match.
Do I need sunscreen with ZO retinol?
Yes. Retinol increases sun sensitivity, so a ZO retinol at night should always be paired with a broad-spectrum SPF in the morning. Any of the five ZO sunscreens works; Sheer Fluid SPF 50 is the gentlest choice while your skin adjusts.
Which ZO sunscreen is water resistant?
Only Daily Sheer SPF 50, rated for 40 minutes of swimming or sweating. The other four ZO sunscreens are not rated for water resistance, so reapply them as soon as you dry off.
Can I wear ZO Sunscreen + Primer without makeup?
Yes. Sunscreen + Primer SPF 30 is a complete mineral sunscreen on its own, with a smooth matte finish. The primer function is a bonus for makeup days, not a requirement.
