Start a ZO Skin Health routine as a beginner by Getting Skin Ready first. Cleanse, polish, then tone. Next we apply Daily Power Defense, moisturize, and protect every morning with broad-spectrum SPF 50.

- ZO's three-step prep: Gentle Cleanser, Exfoliating Polish, and Complexion Renewal Pads.

- Do you polish twice a day?
- No. Use Exfoliating Polish as needed, usually a few times a week.
- Who is this for?
- Someone new to ZO who wants a simple routine, not a long corrector lineup on day one.
That is the order we use when someone is new to ZO Skin Health. You do not need a long corrector lineup on day one. You need prep, one daily serum, moisture when skin feels tight, and sunscreen every morning. This walkthrough stays with products we actually carry.
If you want brand history and a wider product map after you learn the steps, read our ZO Skin Health Canada guide.
Getting Skin Ready
The Getting Skin Ready Program is ZO's three-step prep: Gentle Cleanser, Exfoliating Polish, and Complexion Renewal Pads. The kit on our site includes travel sizes of all three, so you can learn the motions before you move into full sizes.
ZO built Getting Skin Ready so the rest of the lineup can sit on skin that is clean, smooth, and ready to take product. Skip this block and you are layering serum over leftover oil, sunscreen, and dull surface cells.
When you finish the travel sizes, the same three steps are on our shelves as individuals:
Gentle Cleanser
Gentle Cleanser is the first product in the kit, and the cleanser we recommend most often for beginners. ZO's line: it cleanses impurities for refreshed-feeling skin.
Massage a small amount on a damp face and neck, morning and night. Rinse thoroughly. Keep water lukewarm, and take a little extra time along the hairline, jaw, and sides of the nose, where makeup and sunscreen collect.
The formula includes sodium lauroyl oat amino acids to help support the skin barrier after you rinse, plus a botanical extract blend for antioxidant benefits. It is a wash, not a scrub. Let the polish do the physical exfoliation next.
Polish and pads
After the rinse, Exfoliating Polish is the mechanical exfoliant in Getting Skin Ready. After cleansing, gently massage a small amount on a damp face and neck as needed, then rinse thoroughly.
The polish uses ultra-fine magnesium oxide crystals to slough away dead surface cells. It also includes ZOX12, ZO's 12-hour time release antioxidant complex, and tetrahexyldecyl ascorbate, a stable vitamin C ester that helps brighten the look of skin. As needed is the instruction we follow. A light, short massage a few times a week is enough for most beginners. If skin feels hot or tight, pause the polish and stay with cleanser and pads.
Then come Complexion Renewal Pads. Gently wipe over the face morning and night after you exfoliate, or as needed through the day. The pads help remove leftover surface oil and pore-clogging debris. Glycolic acid and salicylic acid help smooth, brighten, and decongest the look of skin, with a botanical extract blend. This is a leave-on step. Do not rinse, and keep the pad away from the eye area.
Cleanser, polish, and pads together are Getting Skin Ready. That is your prep.
Daily Power Defense
Once skin is clean and dry, we apply Daily Power Defense morning and night. This is the beginner serum we reach for because it is built for daily use.
ZO describes Daily Power Defense as an advanced serum clinically shown to strengthen skin's protective barrier while defending against environmental stressors and the look of premature aging. The current formula uses ZO's ZPOLY complex, vitamins A and E as antioxidants, ZO-RRS2 plant stem cell complex to help neutralize free radicals while soothing the look of visible redness, and specialized enzymes from micrococcus lysate and arabidopsis thaliana extract.
Apply a thin layer to clean, dry skin in the morning and at night. Give it a minute to settle before moisturizer. On our site it is offered in 30 ml and 50 ml. Stay with this one serum until the steps feel automatic. You can add other ZO products later.
Hydrating Crème
Hydrating Crème is the moisturizer in this walkthrough. Apply it to clean, dry skin as needed after your serum. That is ZO's direction, and it is the right pace for a beginner.
ZO positions Hydrating Crème for very dry skin. It helps replenish moisture, calm the look of visible irritation, and support the skin barrier. It carries the National Eczema Association Seal of Acceptance. Support ingredients listed on the product include ophiopogon japonicus root extract, myristoyl pentapeptide-11, ZOX12, and colloidal oatmeal.
Start with a thin layer on face and neck. If skin still feels tight, add a little more at night. If it feels heavy, use less, or use it only in the evening. This is a rich cream, not a gel.
Daily Sheer SPF 50
Morning routines end with sunscreen. Daily Sheer Broad-Spectrum Sunscreen SPF 50 is a non-greasy, quick-drying sunscreen with a sheer matte finish. It offers broad-spectrum protection against UVA and UVB rays. ZO also notes natural melanin to help shield skin from the aging effects of high-energy visible (HEV) light. It is water and perspiration resistant, hydrating enough to help prevent dryness, and oxybenzone free.
Apply liberally 15 minutes before sun exposure. Reapply at least every two hours when you are outdoors. If you are swimming or sweating, use a water-resistant sunscreen and reapply as directed on the pack. Makeup goes on after SPF. If you work next to a window, you still wear it.

Shop the collectionFrequently asked questions
Do I use Exfoliating Polish every morning and night?
No. ZO says to use Exfoliating Polish as needed after cleansing. For a beginner, that usually means a light pass a few times a week, not a twice-daily scrub. Keep Gentle Cleanser and Complexion Renewal Pads morning and evening, and add the polish when skin looks dull or feels rough.
Should I start with the Getting Skin Ready Program or full sizes?
We like the Getting Skin Ready Program for first orders because it includes travel sizes of Gentle Cleanser, Exfoliating Polish, and Complexion Renewal Pads. You learn the three prep steps without buying three full sizes at once. When the kit runs down, switch to the individual products.
Can I skip sunscreen if I work indoors?
We would not. Daily Sheer Broad-Spectrum Sunscreen SPF 50 is the last step of the morning routine, including desk days next to a window. Apply it liberally 15 minutes before you head out, and reapply at least every two hours when you are in the sun.
How long should I stay on this beginner routine before adding more ZO products?
Stay here until the order feels automatic: prep, Daily Power Defense, moisture as needed, SPF in the morning. When you want a wider map of the brand, use our ZO Skin Health Canada guide as further reading, then add one product at a time.
Do you offer free shipping and samples on ZO orders?
Yes. We include samples with every order, and Canadian orders of $99 or more qualify for free shipping. You can order the Getting Skin Ready Program and the daily steps from our ZO Skin Health collection.
