Hydrator vs Moisturizer: The Vivier Guide

Hydration · Vivier

A hydrator adds water to the skin. A moisturizer keeps it there. Dehydrated skin needs the first, dry skin needs the second, and a lot of Canadian skin in winter needs both. This guide explains the difference, how to tell which one you are short of, and how Vivier's six face moisturizers divide up the job.

Quick answers

What is the difference between a hydrator and a moisturizer?
Hydrators use humectants such as hyaluronic acid to draw water into the skin. Moisturizers use emollients and occlusives such as shea butter, squalane and plant oils to soften the surface and slow water loss.
Is my skin dry or dehydrated?
Dehydrated skin lacks water: it feels tight, looks dull and can still be oily. Dry skin lacks oil: it feels rough, flakes and rarely shines. Many people are both at once.
Do I need a separate hydrator with Vivier?
Usually not. Vivier's moisturizers carry hyaluronic acid inside the cream, so one product does both jobs. Add a hydrating serum only if your skin is still tight after moisturizing.
Which Vivier moisturizer should I start with?
Daily Age-Defying Moisturizer in the morning ($130). Add the Nightly version ($130) when you want a richer evening step, or Intensive Hydrating Moisturizer ($190) if your skin is very dry.
Which one is for sensitive or post-procedure skin?
DERMA-V ($186) for barrier comfort after treatments, LEXXEL ($130) for everyday dryness and visible redness on reactive skin.

Hydrator vs moisturizer: the difference

The two words get used interchangeably on packaging, which is why so many people buy the wrong one. They describe two different jobs.

A hydrator is built around humectants: ingredients that attract and hold water. Hyaluronic acid, glycerin and panthenol are the common ones. A hydrator raises the water content of the upper layers of the skin, which is what makes skin look plump and feel comfortable rather than tight.

A moisturizer is built around emollients and occlusives: oils, butters and lipids that sit in and on the surface. Shea butter, squalane, avocado oil, ceramides. They soften rough texture and slow the rate at which water evaporates from the skin, so whatever hydration is there stays there.

Two jobs, two ingredient families
Type What it does Typical ingredients Skin that needs it
Hydrator Draws water into the skin and holds it Hyaluronic acid, sodium hyaluronate, glycerin, panthenol Dehydrated skin, any skin type, including oily
Moisturizer Softens the surface and slows water loss Shea butter, squalane, avocado and argan oils, ceramides Dry skin, and anyone in low-humidity conditions

The practical rule. A hydrator without a moisturizer over it can leave skin feeling tighter, because the water it pulls in evaporates. A moisturizer without enough water underneath just seals in dryness. Most people do best with both, and the simplest way to get both is a moisturizer that already contains humectants.

Dry, dehydrated, or both

Dry is a skin type: your skin produces less oil than average, and it tends to stay that way. Dehydrated is a skin condition: your skin is short of water right now, whatever type it is. Oily skin can be dehydrated. Dry skin can be well hydrated. The signs are different enough to tell apart.

How to tell which one you are dealing with
Sign Dehydrated (short of water) Dry (short of oil)
Feel Tight, especially after cleansing Rough, sometimes itchy
Look Dull, fine lines more visible, can still be shiny by afternoon Flaky, matte, rarely shines
Makeup Settles into fine lines Catches on flakes and patches
Changes with Weather, flights, heating, how much water you drank, actives like retinol Mostly constant, worse in winter
Needs Humectants, then something to seal them in Emollients and occlusives, richer at night

If you ticked boxes in both columns, that is normal. Skin that is dry by type is also more likely to become dehydrated, because a thinner oil layer lets water escape faster. The answer is still one product, just a richer one.

How Vivier handles it

Vivier does not sell a standalone hydrating serum. Instead it puts the humectants inside the moisturizers. Sodium hyaluronate appears in the Daily and Nightly Age-Defying Moisturizers, in GrenzCine Face and in DERMA-V, and the Intensive Hydrating Moisturizer is built on a multi-weight hyaluronic acid system. Each is what the brand calls a dual-action product: it hydrates and moisturizes in one step.

That simplifies the routine. The question is not "do I need a hydrator and a moisturizer" but "which Vivier moisturizer has the right balance of water and oil for my skin." The section below is that decision.

Daily vs Nightly Age-Defying

This is the pair most people compare, so here is the difference in one place.

Daily and Nightly Age-Defying Moisturizer compared
Daily Age-Defying Nightly Age-Defying
When Morning, under SPF Evening, last step
Feel Light, absorbs quickly Richer, more cushioning
Oils and lipids Shea butter, argan oil Squalane, avocado, soybean, sunflower oils
Humectants Sodium hyaluronate Sodium hyaluronate plus glycosaminoglycans
Antioxidants Vitamin C and E Vitamin C and E
Price $130 $130

Do you need both? If your skin is normal to oily, the Daily alone, morning and night, is fine for most of the year. If your skin is dry, or you use a retinol, the Nightly earns its place from the first week. The beginner's routine guide starts with the Daily only and adds the Nightly later, which is the right order.

Which one for your skin

Choose by how your skin behaves

Thin, crepey, losing firmness GrenzCine Face GrenzCine Face, or Nightly Age-Defying if budget is a factor

A note on Canadian winters

Indoor heating from November to March drops indoor humidity to a level where even oily skin loses water faster than it can replace it. This is why people who are fine all summer suddenly feel tight in December. The fix is not a new hydrator, it is a richer moisturizer at night: step from Daily to Nightly, or from Nightly to Intensive Hydrating, for the cold months, then step back down in spring. The fall retinol reset guide covers the same seasonal logic for actives.

Where it goes in the routine

  1. Cleanse, and tone if you use a toner.
  2. Serums and targeted products: vitamin C in the morning, retinol or a corrector at night. Thinnest textures first.
  3. Moisturizer. Every Vivier moisturizer goes here, after serums and before sunscreen. This is where the humectants inside it do their work.
  4. Sunscreen, morning only, always last. Sheer SPF 45 or the Sheer SPF 30 Mineral.

Apply moisturizer to skin that is still slightly damp from toner or serum. Humectants have more water to hold on to that way, which is the one small habit that makes a noticeable difference to how hydrated skin feels by mid-morning.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a hydrator and a moisturizer?

A hydrator uses humectants such as hyaluronic acid and glycerin to draw water into the skin. A moisturizer uses emollients and occlusives such as shea butter, squalane and plant oils to soften the surface and slow water loss. Hydrators are for dehydrated skin, moisturizers for dry skin, and most people benefit from both.

Can oily skin be dehydrated?

Yes, and it is common. Oily skin produces plenty of oil but can still be short of water, which shows as tightness after cleansing, dullness and fine lines that look worse than they are. A light moisturizer with humectants, such as the Daily Age-Defying Moisturizer, is the right answer rather than skipping moisturizer altogether.

Does Vivier make a hyaluronic acid serum?

No. Vivier builds hyaluronic acid (sodium hyaluronate) into its moisturizers instead, so the Daily and Nightly Age-Defying Moisturizers, Intensive Hydrating Moisturizer, DERMA-V and GrenzCine Face all hydrate and moisturize in one step.

Which Vivier moisturizer is best for dry skin?

Nightly Age-Defying Moisturizer for dry skin, Intensive Hydrating Moisturizer for very dry or dehydrated skin, and LEXXEL if the dryness comes with sensitivity and visible redness.

Can I use the Nightly Age-Defying Moisturizer in the morning?

You can. It is simply richer than the Daily, so it may feel heavier under sunscreen. In winter, many people use it morning and night without any problem.

Which Vivier moisturizer should I use with retinol?

Nightly Age-Defying Moisturizer applied over the retinol, or Intensive Hydrating Moisturizer if the retinol is leaving your skin dry. On nights when skin feels irritated, DERMA-V alone with no retinol is a sensible rest night.

Where can I buy Vivier moisturizers in Canada?

From an authorized Canadian retailer. Your Skin Solution is an authorized Vivier retailer, with free shipping on orders over $99 within Canada.
