The short version

If the look of discoloration is the job, and you want a leave-on corrector you can use morning and night, start with Discoloration Defense.

If you want a once-daily morning vitamin C serum for the look of discoloration and uneven tone, that is Phloretin CF. We compare it with C E Ferulic in our C E Ferulic vs Phloretin CF guide. This post does not rewrite that comparison.

Discoloration Defense is 30 ml / 1 fl oz at $160 CAD. Apply 3 to 5 drops twice daily. It sits in our SkinCeuticals collection.

What Discoloration Defense is

Our product page calls Discoloration Defense a layerable, daily-use dark-spot corrector. It is clinically proven to reduce the appearance of key types of skin discoloration in all skin tones, including hard-to-treat forms such as stubborn brown patches and post-acne marks.

That is cosmetic language about the look of skin. It is not a diagnosis, and it is not a treatment plan for a medical pigment condition. If a clinician has you on a prescription, keep that plan and ask them before you add a new leave-on.

Layerable matters in a routine. This serum is meant to sit with the rest of your skincare, not to replace cleanser, moisturizer or sunscreen.

Who it is for

Choose Discoloration Defense when the mirror concern is the look of dark spots, stubborn brown patches or post-acne marks, and you want a twice-daily corrector rather than a morning vitamin C.

The product page maps the formula to all skin tones. It does not publish a dry-versus-oily split. We stay with that. If your skin is easily irritated by leave-on acids, start slowly and stop if it does not agree with you. Email us at info@yourskinsolution.ca if you want help placing it in a routine you already own.

How it differs from Phloretin CF

Phloretin CF is a morning vitamin C serum (2% phloretin, 10% L-ascorbic acid, 0.5% ferulic acid). It is published to visibly enhance the appearance of discoloration, and to reduce the look of fine lines and uneven skin tone. We cover who it is for, versus C E Ferulic, in the live C E Ferulic vs Phloretin CF post.

Discoloration Defense is a different product with a different cadence. It is used twice daily. The published INCI lists niacinamide, tranexamic acid and kojic acid. It does not list L-ascorbic acid. Do not treat the two bottles as interchangeable.

You can own both. Using both on the same morning is a layering question the Discoloration Defense page does not answer. We do not invent a sequence. If you already use Phloretin CF in the morning, ask us before you stack another leave-on on top of it.

How to use it

Directions on our product page: apply 3 to 5 drops of SkinCeuticals skin discoloration serum, twice daily.

  1. On clean skin, morning and night, dispense 3 to 5 drops.
  2. Spread a thin layer over the face, or over the areas where the look of discoloration bothers you.
  3. Follow with the rest of your skincare. In the morning, finish with sunscreen. This serum does not replace SPF.

Twice daily means morning and night unless your clinician says otherwise. The page does not publish a wait time between this serum and the next step. Apply, let it settle, then continue.

What is on the INCI

The published INCI on our product page includes water, butylene glycol, niacinamide, hydroxyethylpiperazine ethane sulfonic acid, glycerin, tranexamic acid, propylene glycol, hydroxyethyl urea, kojic acid, caprylyl glycol, allantoin, chlorphenesin, xanthan gum and disodium EDTA.

Niacinamide, tranexamic acid and kojic acid are the names shoppers usually look for in a dark-spot corrector. We list them because they are on the label. We do not assign unpublished percentages or extra clinical figures.

Which to buy first

Buy Discoloration Defense first if you want a twice-daily dark-spot corrector for the look of discoloration, including stubborn brown patches and post-acne marks, at $160 CAD for 30 ml.

Buy a morning vitamin C first if that is the gap in the routine. For the look of discoloration and uneven tone, that SkinCeuticals option is Phloretin CF. For the look of lines and firmness, it is C E Ferulic. The comparison lives here: C E Ferulic vs Phloretin CF.
